I love "Hatchet"!! I read it to my class every year when I taught 5th grade. Did you know that there are actually 2 sequels to "Hatchet"? The first sequel written was "The River" and it was written shortly after Hatchet was written. The second sequel came out many years after "Hatchet", this book was "Brian's Winter". I do think that it's worth reading both books because Gary Paulsen it such a great author and it's interesting how he follows "Hatchet" in both books. I'm not going to tell you which book is my favorite sequel, but I would be happy to discuss it with you if you read the sequels. There was also a movie based on "Hatchet", it was called "A Cry in the Wild", very difficult to find. I stopped watching it after about 15 minutes because it was such a disappointment. As you know, in "Hatchet" much of what we know about Brian and his struggles is told through his thoughts. After all, he is alone on the island, no need to speak out loud. Unfortunately, the movie can't share his thoughts, unless they used thought bubbles, which are only appropriate for cartoons. The movie shows Brian wandering around the island talking to himself, and it's not the interesting dialog that he is able to process in his mind. It's not a book that should have been made into a movie, it loses all of its authenticity.
